Privacy Policy

Ivy Mentors is a boutique college admissions consultancy operated by Alex Leventhal in Los Angeles, California. This policy explains what personal information we collect through ivymentors.com, why we collect it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. It applies to this website and to the consulting relationships that begin here.

We work with families and with students who are minors. We treat that as a responsibility, and we have written this policy to be read and understood rather than to protect us. If anything here is unclear, please ask.

Information you give us

The contact form on this site asks for the following, and nothing else:

The parent or guardian’s first and last name
An email address and phone number
The student’s first and last name
The student’s school and grade
Which service you are interested in
How you heard about Ivy Mentors, if you choose to tell us
Anything you write in the comments field

Every field except the referral source and comments is required, because we cannot respond usefully without it. Please do not send sensitive information through the form: no Social Security numbers, financial account details, test scores, transcripts, health information or immigration status. If we need any of that during an engagement, we will arrange a secure way to share it.

Information collected automatically

We use Google Analytics to understand how many people visit the site and which pages they read. It records technical information such as a truncated IP address, browser and device type, approximate city-level location, referring website, and the pages you view. We have not enabled Google Signals, advertising features, remarketing or cross-device tracking, and we do not use this data to build profiles of individuals.

Google Analytics sets two cookies in your browser, named _ga and _ga_ followed by a short identifier. They hold a random identifier so that a repeat visit is not counted as a new person, and they expire after two years. The site sets no other cookies and no advertising cookies of any kind. Analytics also loads only after the page has finished rendering, so it never delays what you came to read.

Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland are treated differently. For those visits, analytics storage is switched off by default, which means no analytics cookies are set at all. We receive only an anonymous, cookieless count of the visit. We consider that a reasonable trade: we lose a little detail, and you are not asked to agree to anything.

How we use your information

To reply to your inquiry and arrange a consultation
To provide consulting services if we begin working together
To keep ordinary business records, including correspondence and invoices
To understand which parts of the site are useful, in aggregate

We do not use your information for any other purpose without asking you first.

What we will never do

We do not sell, rent, license or trade personal information. We never have.
We do not share your information with advertisers, data brokers or lead-generation services.
We do not add you to a marketing list because you submitted the contact form.
We do not disclose that a family works with Ivy Mentors, or where a student applied or was admitted, without explicit permission.

Students under 18

Inquiries should be submitted by a parent or guardian. When a student is under 18, we ask that a parent or guardian consent to our collection of that student’s name, school and grade, which is all the form requests about the student.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has submitted information through this site, email alex@ivymentors.com and we will delete it promptly.

During an engagement, a student’s essays and application materials remain the student’s own work and property. We use them only to advise that student, and we do not publish, share or reuse them, including as writing samples, without written permission from the family.

Who else handles your information

We keep the list of companies with access to your information as short as we can:

Netlify hosts this website and receives contact form submissions, which it stores and forwards to us by email.
Google Analytics processes the site usage data described above.
Our email provider holds the correspondence between us, as with any email.

Each of these acts as a service provider, processing information on our behalf rather than for their own purposes. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, which has not happened to date.

How long we keep it

Inquiries that do not become engagements: deleted within 24 months.
Client records: kept for the duration of the engagement and for three years afterward, so that we can answer questions from families we have worked with. Business records required for tax purposes are kept for seven years.
Analytics data: retained for 14 months, then deleted automatically.

You can ask us to delete your information sooner. See below.

Your rights

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act gives you the right to know what personal information we hold about you, to receive a copy of it, to correct it, to have it deleted, and not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights. Because we do not sell or share personal information for advertising, there is nothing for you to opt out of.

To exercise any of these rights, email alex@ivymentors.com. We will confirm your identity, and we will respond within 45 days. There is no charge.

You can also opt out of Google Analytics entirely, on every site you visit, by installing Google’s browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, or by enabling “Do Not Track” or a tracking blocker in your browser.

Security

This site is served over HTTPS, so information you submit is encrypted in transit. Form submissions are protected by two-factor authentication on the accounts that can read them. No system is perfect, and we will not claim otherwise; what we can say is that we collect little, keep it briefly, and limit who can see it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and the date above. If a change is significant and affects families we are currently working with, we will tell them directly rather than relying on this page.
